I work in student advising at San Antonio College, supporting students and front desk operations. My interests include student access, disability inclusion, and making the steps of college easier to navigate.

My experience with Deaf and DeafBlind communities informs my interest in how institutions support students with different abilities.

Course Description:

This course is an introductory course on student affairs and higher education administration. We will cover topics such as the history of student affairs administration, philosophical/theoretical foundations of student affairs, critical contemporary issues, serving diverse student populations, social justice and upholding equity in higher education. Students taking this course are interested in pursuing a career as student affairs administrators and/or seek to work in colleges and universities. Therefore, the purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of student affairs administration and its role within U.S. higher education.

Course Description:

A knowledge of history makes possible the awareness and understanding of present-day issues in higher education, such as the interdependence and role of higher education in society. This course covers the development of western higher education from the 11th century to the present with an emphasis on the development of U.S. higher education since the colonial colleges.

This course offers an introductory overview of the American community college system with particular emphasis on the history, philosophy, and uniqueness of these institutions. State, local governance, and finance for community colleges are also explored. This course is designed for individuals who or aspire to, key leadership hold, and supervisory positions in a community college, and for others who seek to learn more about the comprehensive nature of these institutions and their role in the post-secondary knowledge industry. Given the unique context of this course in relation to the student affair’s professional role students hold as part of this graduate program, this course will also provide content for understanding specific structures and functions of the community college system within South Texas.

Director Romo oversees academic accommodations, staff, programs, and strategic planning for Student Accessibility Services. He previously coordinated student compliance across the Alamo Colleges District and spent nine years with the Department of Family and Protective Services. He is a U.S. Army veteran and holds degrees in criminal justice, including a master’s in criminal justice leadership and management.

Internship Overview

Placement: Student Accessibility Services, San Antonio College
Dates: September 14–December 12, 2026 (planned)
Schedule: Approximately 5–6 hours per week, varying by week
Planned hours: 75

This internship provides hands-on experience supporting students with diverse accessibility needs, applying disability access policy in practice, and exploring leadership within Student Accessibility Services.

Learning Outcomes and Evidence

1. Student Empowerment and Direct Service
Use student-centered communication to help students understand resources, make informed decisions, and advocate for their educational needs. Planned evidence: reflections on 8–10 supervised student interactions, a de-identified summary, and supervisor feedback.

2. Applying Accessibility Theory and Policy to Practice
Apply knowledge of disability access and the ADA to student needs, institutional policy, and reasonable accommodations. Planned evidence: three de-identified case analyses of accessibility needs, office responses, and lessons learned.

3. Accessibility Leadership and Problem-Solving
Examine an accessibility challenge or service gap and develop an evidence-informed response. Planned evidence: a resource, process improvement proposal, training material, presentation, or recommendation, with supervisor feedback and reflection.
